Which box is placed on the sign? What kind of gearbox is on the Lada Vesta? Vesta manual transmission

Today, the manufacturer installs 2 types of boxes on the Lada Vesta: mechanical and the Lada Vesta box - AMT robot. The AvtoVAZ press service constantly notes that the company plans to produce its own fully automatic transmissions, but the talk does not go beyond assurances, there are no specific dates in the promises, so it is unknown when Russian motorists will wait for this innovation.

Manual transmissions

Until September 2016 The Lada Vesta was equipped with manual gearboxes manufactured by Renault, which, in order to optimize and reduce the cost, were replaced with Russian-made gearboxes. The new gearboxes, marked with the VAZ-21807 index, have become a reinforced version of the traditional base VAZ-2180 gearbox, equipped with a cable drive shift mechanism. Modification 21807 is designed for higher torque than 2180 and is much quieter than the original box.

With the change of box, the gear ratio of the main pair was slightly increased from 3.87 to 3.94. Vesta has also become more dynamic according to the passport: the acceleration time to 100 km/h has decreased from 11.2 s to 10.2 s and the maximum speed has increased from 175 km/h to 188 km/h. Although, as a minus, it can be noted that fuel consumption has increased slightly: from 6.9 to 7.5 l/100 km in the combined cycle.

Today, the production of cars with Renault gearboxes has largely ceased, although, of course, they can be found in sufficient quantities among used models. It is possible to identify the gearbox model by the VIN number of the car: if it contains the code GFL13, then it is a Renault manual gearbox, the code is GFL11 - this is a VAZ “mechanics”.

Versions with the first robot are coded GFL12. However, for example, the Lada Vesta SV cross is equipped with 2 mechanical transmissions to choose from: the first of which is domestically produced, and the second is French. In the second case, the car is equipped with a French 5-speed manual JR5 from Renault (the main pair is 4.212).

Automatic boxes

The first automated gearbox, VAZ’s own AMT design, appeared in the fall of 2014. It is designed on the basis of a 5-speed manual gearbox and complemented by an electronic control unit and ZF actuators.

In February 2018 New AMT 2.0 robots also appeared, replacing the first AMT development. The AMT 2.0 robotic gearbox is installed only on 1.8 engines, however, it is possible to reflash cars of previous releases, including those with a 1.6 engine. To do this, you need to contact the dealership. To activate the Crawl mode on earlier cars, it is necessary to reflash the engine ECM and AMT. No structural changes are required to the car.

The main advantage of the modernized robots is the appearance of 2 modes - creeping and winter, as well as a reduction in the time of sequential gear shifting from 1st to 2nd, then to 3rd. Switching intervals have been reduced by as much as 30% thanks to the optimization of the servo drive activation algorithm, regardless of engine speed. The creep mode increases the convenience of movement in dense traffic flow (in traffic jams).

As for the creep mode, it is borrowed from the standard machine. When the gear selector is in positions A, M, R, the car moves forward or backward without fuel supply until the brake is pressed, the handbrake is raised, and the door is opened. The driving speed can reach 15 km/h depending on the gear selection. In first gear it is 7–8 km/h, in second up to 14–15 km/h, and when moving backwards it is 5–6 km/h.

There is no separate button for winter mode. It will help you start on a slippery surface from second gear. To do this, just after starting the engine, press the brake and select gear M2 with the gearbox selector.

Variable speed drive

And, of course, fans of the Tolyatti auto industry are looking forward to the appearance of the promised CVT in 2019. According to preliminary information, a variator with an imitation of 7 steps will first be offered in combination with the Nissan 1.6L HR16 engine, since we are talking about the Jatco JF015E transmission, which is designed for torque up to 160 Nm. It is quite possible that in the future the CVT continuously variable transmission will be gradually adapted to its own 1.8L engine.

The advantages of a CVT over an AMT are obvious. This is, first of all, the convenience of speed control. Cars with CVT pick up speed especially smoothly, without jerks or dips. They have a smoother ride and more dynamic acceleration than AT cars. The CVT is significantly quieter and more economical than classic torque converter transmissions.

Conclusion

It should be noted that transmission optimization is a constant process at AvtoVAZ. However, all this information is unofficial and there is no confirmation of it. Although an undoubted fact remains the growth in sales of the Lada Vesta in 2018. In the first four months, the sales volume of the entire Lada increased by more than a quarter - to 110,000 cars. Demand for Lada Vesta increased by almost 25.5% compared to last year.

When choosing a gearbox version for the Lada Vesta, each driver usually starts from his own experience. Professionals will not exchange a manual transmission for anything, in which the shift speed depends solely on the speed of the hands, and in a big city, AMT 2.0 with a creeping mode will be useful. Vesta does not yet have a smart and full-fledged automatic machine, but one can immediately expect that the price will become its important drawback.

Since the end of 2016, AvtoVAZ has abandoned the use of the French manual transmission in Vesta and Xray cars in favor of a domestic, modernized gearbox with the VAZ 21807 index. Now the domestic unit is installed on the entire model.

Technical parameters of the VAZ 21807 gearbox

Drive type - cable

Number of gears - 5

Main pair - 3.9

Comparison of basic parameters with French mechanics

From the indicators it is clear that installing a shorter main pair than on the Renault gave noticeable dynamics during acceleration, gaining 1 second “to one hundred”. The gear ratios were also adjusted, now the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears are longer.

Box JH3 510 (gear ratios): 3.727; 2.048; 1.393; 1.029; 0.795; main pair - 3.867.
2. Gearbox 21807, respectively: 3.636; 1.950; 1.357; 0.941; 0.784; main pair - 3.938.

What changed?

The logical question would be, what has changed compared to the old 2180 box? Has it become quieter? Has the howling gone?

AvtoVAZ, with the help of foreign partners, did a great job in refining the box. What was done: The production complex was equipped with other equipment in order to create a main pair and a second gear with a different gear tooth structure. The work was carried out in such a way that when braking the engine, when shifting gears down, the hum of the box was not so pronounced and coincided with the hum of the engine. In addition, the gear selection mechanism has also undergone minor modifications: now the gearbox shifts have become much clearer.

Is the new manual transmission of the VAZ 21807 quieter than the previous one?

The answer is YES! Quieter, no hum. Consumers are happy. But it should be noted that whoever is specifically looking for various jambs will find them anywhere

Why did they abandon the French box?

Previously, Vesta was equipped with a manual transmission with index jh3 and jr5. Undoubtedly, they were better than the VAZ mechanics of that time, but they still had jambs with hum and gear shifts. But the most important factor in refusing French units was the cost: French mechanics are almost 2 times more expensive than domestic ones. The situation is the same with the Nissan engine; they will not install it on Vesta; they will leave the 179 engines. In addition, box 21807 is capable of withstanding the torque of a 1.8 motor. (In general, the VAZ gearbox holds torque well; as an example, you can use motorsports athletes who install a standard gearbox on turbo VAZs).

What kind of box do you have?

To determine which gearbox you have, domestic or brand new, you need to look at the VIN number of your car () everything is simple: The values from the fourth digit determine the gearbox model (GFL11 - manual transmission VAZ; GFL12 - AMT VAZ; GFL13 ─ manual transmission Renault).

The new Lada Vesta has been produced by the Volzhsky Automobile Plant for about a year. During this period, all technological solutions were tested in practice by drivers who purchased this sedan or hatchback. It is important for VAZ designers to know what consumers would like to see as the optimal version of Vesta. Listening to the wishes of car enthusiasts, the Togliatti manufacturer is gradually optimizing the technical characteristics of the Lada. One of the innovations was the introduction into production of a Russian-style manual gearbox to replace the imported one.

AvtoVAZ engineers are also continuously working to improve the quality of automatic manual transmission production, as car owners receive suggestions and recommendations for improving the operation of the robot. In this article we will look at how the mechanics and automatic machine of Vesta change over time.

At first, French mechanics and a domestic robot were produced

The launch of Lada Vesta started in September 2015. Developers from Tolyatti decided to equip the car with the following transmission versions: a French manual transmission and a robotic version developed in Russia. The first version was produced with a 1.6-liter engine, and the second with a 0.2-liter larger unit.

When designing the car's chassis, engineers were faced with the choice of which manual gearbox to equip the Lada with: French or domestic. Many factors were taken into account when comparing the two options. A five-speed mechanism, which was used on previous models of VAZ sedans: Priora, Granta, Kalina, was considered as a domestic transmission.

But Vesta was envisioned as a car of a more modern era, so the gear shift system had to be at a fundamentally new level of quality. The box option of previous versions of sedans was bad in that it created a relatively high level of noise from the operation of the transmission. Also, the quality of smooth gear shifting of the VAZ 2180 gearbox did not meet the requirements of a modern high-tech car. In order to implement the 2180, the developers needed to eliminate the shortcomings of the old version.

But at the time of designing the Lada Vesta, in order to modernize the existing mechanics, it was necessary to significantly change the operating principle in order to remove noise and excessive sharpness of switching. The time period allotted for this development was not enough for domestic engineers. In addition, the accelerated modification of the VAZ gearbox was an unprofitable solution due to its cost. And the monetary component of choosing an introduced transmission is the main criterion in favor of one option or another, since the main principle of AvtoVAZ’s pricing policy is to produce the most affordable cars possible for ordinary citizens.

Based on the above circumstances, Tolyatti residents decided to equip the Lada Vesta with a manual transmission model from the Renault-Nissan concern. It made much less noise and had smoother shifting. This box was still assembled in Russia, but the parts for its assembly were French components and assemblies.

The automatic transmission is a robotic version of the transmission (automatic transmission - AMT). It was decided not to install a classic automatic on the Lada Vesta, also for economic reasons. In this robot, the electronic system turns the clutch off and on, and can also independently change gears.

Modification of the mechanical box

The Volzhsky Automobile Plant strives to reduce costs for the production of serial cars. One of the options for reducing manufacturing costs is to replace foreign-made parts with domestic ones. This concept has already been implemented on the Lada XRAY: recently the Japanese engine from Nissan has ceased to be installed on the crossover.

This fall, it was decided to do the same with the Vesta line of cars: from September, sedans and hatchbacks of this model will be equipped with a domestic one instead of a French manual transmission. It is a modified version of the VAZ-2180 transmission. The shift knob also has 5 positions and reverse. The transmission drive in this box is a cable. This mechanics is used to equip the chassis of Grant, Kalina and Priora cars. The modified 21087 system provides an increase in torque compared to the old version. Also, the new version will work with significantly less noise, because AvtoVAZ used new equipment to manufacture the main pair units.

The new box has been changed like this.

Gearbox device

It was precisely because of the high noise and hum generated when driving that the ex-president of the company decided not to use the Russian 2180, choosing the French manual transmission Renault JH3 as an alternative. As mentioned above, Renault boxes are assembled at VAZ, but they consist entirely of French-made parts and components. Before the launch of West into mass production, engineers said that the cost of the French mechanism was 3 thousand rubles more expensive, which was about 20 percent of the cost of the entire box. And since VAZ strives to reduce production costs, work was carried out throughout the year to improve the old-style manual transmission. Thanks to the work done, 1.6 liter engines have been equipped with VAZ 21087 since September. In the future, it is planned to introduce this box on 1.8 liter units.

The gear shift knob itself does not differ in appearance from the old one. To understand which box is on your Vesta, take a look at the Lada VIN number:

  • GFL13 numbers correspond to Renault;
  • GFL11 – AvtoVAZ.

Cars with French-style gearboxes can still be purchased, but mass production of cars with such a transmission has already been stopped. Now Vestas with VAZ mechanics are arriving at car dealerships.

We boldly declare that the most anticipated car in our country in 2018 is the Russian Lada Vesta SW Cross station wagon, namely the all-terrain version. Let us remind you that the Cross differs from the standard station wagon in that it has increased ground clearance by 25 mm, the presence of plastic body protection all around, as well as richer equipment. On our own behalf, we can add that when choosing between two cars, we would give preference to the Vesta SV Cross, because this car looks more interesting, and in terms of characteristics, the Cross is a little more attractive than its brother. It is also worth considering that the all-terrain version is slightly more expensive than a regular station wagon; the difference in the price of the basic versions is about 116,000 rubles.

On our website we have already talked about, today we would like to take a closer look at the versions equipped with a manual gearbox.

Whose mechanics?

Perhaps one of the main questions among potential owners is the question related to the manual transmission, or rather, is there a French or Russian gearbox on the new Lada Vesta St. Cross station wagon of the 2018 model year? This question is very relevant, because... The first versions of the Vesta sedan were equipped with French transmissions, then in order to reduce the cost of the car, Vesta began to be equipped with Russian gearboxes. This raises a reasonable question: is Russian or foreign mechanics installed on the SV cross. We managed to find out from AvtoVAZ representatives that the car is equipped with a French 5-speed manual JR5 from Renault (the main pair is 4.212).

It is worth noting that the Lada Vesta sedan is equipped with two mechanical transmissions, the first made in Russia, the second made in France. You can understand which transmission a car is equipped with by looking at the engine index. The Russian box has the index VAZ-21179-01 (Vesta MT 21807), while the French one is called 21179-50 (Vesta MT JR5-515).

The disadvantages of the JR5 gearbox from Renault are the high price compared to the domestic design, there are problems with engaging reverse gear, and noisy operation (box whine).

Price and engine options

Now we invite you to talk about which engines come with a manual gearbox, as well as the cost of the Lada Vesta SV Cross station wagon in 2018:

1.6 liter petrol engine with 106 horsepower

  • Luxe price from 755,900 rubles;
  • Luxe Multimedia price from 779,900 rubles;

1.8 liter petrol engine with 122 horsepower

  • Luxe price from 780,900 rubles;
  • Luxe Multimedia price from 804,900 rubles;
  • Luxe Prestige price from 822,900 rubles.

Alternative, what to choose for this money?

Agree, it is difficult to realize that the cost of a domestic car can be more than 800,000 rubles. Probably every car owner will think several times about what new cars he can buy for this amount, besides Vesta. It is noteworthy that SW Cross simply has no competitors in this segment; many will choose between Vesta SV Cross and Solaris, Rio, Polo sedan and Rapid. Of all the above, we would give preference to Rapid, because The trunk of a Czech car is more spacious, and there is the option of choosing an automatic transmission. Not many journalists mention that for the amount of 890,000 rubles you can buy a Renault Duster crossover with a 2.0 liter gasoline engine and all-wheel drive. Yes, of course, the Duster will be more expensive, but you will get all-wheel drive.

Another alternative is to consider purchasing the Chinese crossover Chery Tiggo 2

This model, in our opinion, also has a very attractive interior and exterior design; moreover, the technical parameters of the Chinese crossover and the domestic station wagon are similar. Both cars have plastic body protection, high ground clearance and front-wheel drive. Chery Tiggo 2 is equipped with a 1.5 liter petrol engine producing 106 hp. The price of a car in Russia, depending on the configuration, varies between 598,000 – 789,900 rubles.

This list may also include a huge list of Chinese crossovers whose price will be comparable to the all-terrain version of the station wagon.

I don’t like Chinese cars, ok, as an alternative you can consider the Korean crossover Hyundai Creta

Yes, of course, it will be a car with a basic configuration and front-wheel drive, but you will receive a 5-year warranty, a 1.6 liter gasoline engine and a 6-speed manual transmission, a high seating position, an attractive design and, most importantly, reliability.

Advantages and disadvantages

In the end, I would like to summarize and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of mechanics and in particular the car.

One of the advantages can be noted b:

  • if we choose between manual and AMT, our choice would be a manual transmission due to reliability and cheaper maintenance;
  • This also includes dynamics;
  • Of course, another advantage is the more affordable price of the car itself, equipped with mechanics, than Vesta with a robot
  • efficiency
  • full control, you can switch when you need it

The disadvantages include

  • dynamics compared to Korean competitors, who are much faster, both from the stratospheric level and on the highway
  • I would like to see the presence of a sixth gear, which would reduce fuel consumption when driving on the highway, and would also reduce noise

Of course, the 2018 Lada Vesta SW Cross is, in our opinion, one of the best cars today in the AvtoVAZ line and has no competitors in its segment. However, if we consider the alternative as a whole, it turns out that for the price of Vesta you can find good options among new cars, and if you turn to the used car market, you will find quite a large number of options. We sincerely hope that AvtoVAZ will not stop there and that in the future we can expect the appearance of even more interesting models.

Currently, Lada Vesta is available with a manual transmission and AMT. Each of these two types of gearboxes has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is impossible to say with absolute certainty that any one of these gearboxes is superior to the other in technical parameters.

Initially, the manufacturer planned to produce a gearbox for the Lada Vesta exclusively from AvtoVAZ’s developments, however, during the work process a different decision was made. It was decided to install a Russian “robot” and foreign “mechanics” from the friendly concern “Renault-Nissan” in the Lada Vesta.

About manual transmission

The manual transmission on the Lada Vesta, created by Renault and Nissan, turned out better than its Russian counterparts. Its main advantage was the absence of noise at all gear levels.

The problem was solved with the help of modern equipment and the use of the latest technologies when creating a new gearbox. The so-called JH gearbox is found on many foreign car models and has proven itself quite well in the process. However, for such luxury you have to pay about 20% more than a VAZ manual transmission would cost. A manual transmission is installed on all available configurations of the Lada Vesta.

Advantages of a manual transmission:

  • it works without noise;
  • smoothly switches speeds;
  • works clearly and without failures.

Another advantage of the new box was that the mechanics were moved to the top of the transmission.

This made it possible to significantly reduce oil consumption on the Lada Vesta. Also, thanks to this, the effect of difficult gear shifting on a manual transmission, which arose due to oil thickening, was eliminated.

Robotic gearbox

A robotic gearbox is a type of automatic transmission, along with manual transmissions, and is widely used in modern automotive production. Lada Vesta is equipped with such a gearbox, and it is completely developed by AvtoVAZ, but assembled using foreign components.

The VAZ AMT has built-in German actuators from the well-known company ZF and a clutch from Valeo. The robot on the Lada Vesta is equipped with a system that compensates for wear and damage to the clutch. AMT does not need to warm up before driving, unlike automatic transmissions. The robot makes it possible to change gearbox speeds in automatic and manual mode. AMT weighs much less than an automatic transmission, therefore it significantly reduces fuel consumption on the Lada Vesta.

Advantages of the robot in Lada Vesta:

  • the automatic machine protects against incorrect speed switching;
  • you can use the manual switching method and automatic;
  • the driver can perform sharp acceleration, as with a manual transmission, which will be faster than with a CVT or automatic;
  • there is a stage reset mode;
  • low fuel consumption - no more than seven liters in the urban cycle;
  • you can immediately start driving, without warming up, even in severe frosts;
  • requires much less oil than other similar car models with an automatic transmission and a CVT - 3 liters, instead of 9-10;
  • The gearbox is automatically adjusted to the driver’s individual driving style;
  • allowed to tow trailers and cars.

One of the important properties of the Lada Vesta on AMT is that its repairs are inexpensive. It will be slightly cheaper than a manual transmission and several times more profitable than similar models operating with an automatic transmission. Also, AMT is much more affordable in terms of price compared to automatic transmission.

Properties of AMT when driving

The AMT has been produced for Lada since 2014; it was originally created for the Priora, since automatic transmission cannot be installed on it. Gradually, the robot replaced automatic machines from all Lada models.

Features of riding an AMT:

  • the clutch on the robotic gearbox operates smoothly and closes softly even when pressed sharply;
  • for quick acceleration, you can manually reset the gearbox speed, which is not available on other cars with automatic transmission;
  • there is no possibility of mistakenly selecting reverse speed when moving forward;
  • operates relatively silently, noise is difficult to detect even with a barely audible radio playing;
  • The robot's service life is 10 years.

After the release of the Lada Vesta with AMT, many rumors appeared around the car. They talked about the need to shift the gear to N after each braking, while driving in traffic jams. There have been claims that the robotic gearbox regularly selects a gear incorrectly. This information turned out to be unreliable and was not confirmed in practice by Lada owners with AMT.

In order to improve road safety, the robot is adapted to various non-standard situations.

For example, it can work with a discharged battery or slip for a long time when it gets into snow or sand.

In addition, Lada Vesta with AMT is capable of operating at extremely low temperatures - down to minus 55 degrees Celsius. The computer also more rationally selects vehicle operating modes in terms of fuel consumption, which reduces the financial costs of car maintenance.

Disadvantages of the robot

In Lada Vesta, along with the advantages, the robotic gearbox also has a number of disadvantages. Every person who has experience driving an automatic or CVT will feel the differences of the robot from the first minutes. First of all, you won't find a creep mode in the AMT. There is a risk of rolling in both directions when, for example, you are standing at a traffic light. It also causes inconvenience when parking.

Without a creeping mode, you have to independently dose the gas pressure, which is much more difficult. Therefore, in a parking lot crowded with cars, AMT has additional chances of getting into an accident. It is more convenient to drive a car in a traffic jam by switching to manual transmission mode.

About the variator

In the near future, Lada Vesta with a CVT will go on sale. The friendly concern Renault-Nissan is developing the new gearbox. A CVT is an automatic transmission without fixed gear shift stages. A car equipped with such a gearbox picks up speed more smoothly and has lower fuel consumption than with an automatic transmission or AMT.

The variator guarantees the absence of jerks and vibrations during gear shifting. But as a counterbalance to this, we can add that the CVT is more expensive to maintain. Another disadvantage is the high cost of oil, however, it needs to be changed less frequently than with an automatic transmission.

Conclusion

The choice of gearbox for the Lada Vesta depends, first of all, on your individual preferences. But they are all made at a decent level in terms of quality, performance and convenience. Perhaps the creation of a Lada Vesta with an automatic transmission would make many adjustments to this situation, but since this will not be implemented, car enthusiasts face a difficult choice. It is possible that the appearance of a variator on the market can radically change the situation.
