Volkswagen Passat B5 / B6 is easy to drive and has an affordable price. Foreign cars are in demand among various categories of people. The Passat B6 model can be equipped with such well-known types of gearboxes as automatic transmission, manual transmission, manual transmission.

Automatic transmission Volkswagen Passat B5 - operating advantages

The automatic transmission on the Passat B5 model includes control units. Thanks to the operation of the transformer, there will be no jerks or jolts when changing speed modes. This gearbox option provides automated selection of speed modes for a specific situation. The automatic transmission is complemented by an oil pump, as well as a radiator, which is necessary to cool the filled working fluid. Speed changes are carried out using moving couplings. It should be noted that there are no gears.

For preventive purposes, the gearbox should be warmed up before moving. This procedure is especially relevant in the winter season. This has a positive effect on the valve body. If the malfunction is associated specifically with this working mechanism, then vibrations and shocks will be felt when moving. A number of generations of VW Passat have an on-board computer, based on the readings of which you can obtain information about the condition of the valve body.

Thus, the automatic transmission on the Passat model provides effective automated speed selection depending on the driving mode. Timely maintenance helps to extend its life.

Automatic transmission malfunctions in Volkswagen Passat

When is a Volkswagen Passat automatic transmission required? We list the main transmission problems that the owner of this foreign car may encounter:

  • leakage of working fluid;
  • vibrations when changing gears;
  • loss of control unit functionality;
  • jerks from the gearbox.

Leakage may occur as a result of worn rubber seals. In this case, it is worth replacing these consumables with new elements.

If the control unit fails on a Passat B6 or B5, an incorrect speed change occurs while driving. This mechanism should be fully diagnosed. Based on the diagnostic results, measures must be taken to eliminate the malfunction. As a rule, replacement of the cables is required.

The cause of strong vibration may be that the torque converter has failed. In parallel with this, there may be a loss of driving dynamics.

The Volkswagen auto system should be filled with transmission fluid that will have an optimal viscosity index.

Automatic transmission repair Passat

  1. Place the car on a jack or inspection hole.
  2. Drain the transmission fluid.
  3. Remove the pan, pipes, hoses, rods and other elements related to the gearbox.
  4. Remove the screws securing the torque converter.

During the process of removing the automatic transmission on the Passat B5, care must be taken; the torque converter should be supported, as there is a possibility that it will come off the pulley spline. Next, the removed unit is rebuilt. During this procedure, the condition of clutches, friction discs, and rubber seals is checked. If they are deformed, they should be replaced. The hydraulic unit needs to be washed.

As soon as all faulty car parts have been replaced, the gearbox is installed in its normal location. In this case, it is worth filling in new transmission oil.

Volkswagen Passat cars are widely used in Russia. One of the most successful models is B5.

This car was equipped with both manual and automatic transmissions. And if the first ones were simple and did not need repairs, then over the years of operation, the automatic transmission begins to require increased attention. The reasons for the breakdown may be different. Below we list the most common cases.

Why you may need to repair the Passat B5 automatic transmission

In automatic transmissions, oil is the working fluid, and therefore it is important to monitor its level. On old boxes the level may drop for several reasons. This is the weak tightness of gaskets and other sealing rubber bands. A striking example of this is the automatic transmission pan gasket. If a leak is detected, this element should be replaced with a new one. This is one of the most trivial reasons that can lead to the need for serious repair of the Passat B5 automatic transmission. After all, the machine cannot be operated with a low level of ATP fluid.

In what cases does the torque converter oil seal leak and repair of the VW Passat B5 automatic transmission is necessary?

This usually happens after 200 thousand kilometers. A leak is a serious sign that indicates problems with the torque converter. So, often before repairing a VW Passat B5 automatic transmission, namely after diagnosing the box, technicians discover that the torque converter locking clutch has been worn down to the ground. So, the element does not brake, but slides. As a result, the oil begins to burn and clog the automatic transmission valve body. As a result, the load on the torque converter oil seal increases. The problem can be complicated by shaft vibrations. If such problems are detected, it is necessary to diagnose the pump and bushings.

Note! A broken oil seal will not leak much ATP fluid. But this is the main sign of broken bushings and problems with the pump. The latter may supply insufficient oil, which leads to increased wear of transmission elements.

Reasons for contamination of the Volkswagen automatic transmission valve body

The reason for repairing the valve body of the Passat B5 automatic transmission may be dirt from worn box clutches. The solenoid spools begin to work incorrectly “cold” or “hot”, which is why kicks occur when switching gears. A valve body malfunction is detected by computer diagnostics and error reading.

If at least one of the hydraulic plate valves is faulty, this can lead to:

  • Reduced pressure in one of the clutches;
  • Slipping of friction clutches and their premature wear.

Nuances of automatic transmission repair Passat B5: solenoids

Contamination of these elements occurs due to the ingress of fine friction dust, which the automatic transmission filters did not have time to retain. So, dirt clogs the bronze solenoid bushings. As a result, the valves begin to stick or loosen. A sign of this are jolts and kicks when changing gears. Repair of the Volkswagen Passat B5 automatic transmission in this case comes down to replacing the solenoids and bushings.

Important! Repairing the Passat B5 automatic transmission without installing new rings and bushings can lead to rapid failure of the solenoids. Therefore, parts are changed only as a set.

Why is the problem with wear of rings and bushings dangerous? Over time, a gap forms between the shaft housing and the ring, into which the pump begins to drive oil under pressure. And this happens until the automatic transmission pump runs out of steam and the pressure it generates is insufficient to compress the clutches.

A sign of a malfunction may be the characteristic whine of the pump and vibration. And due to low oil pressure, wear on bushings and shafts increases significantly.

ECU and other mechanisms in the process of repairing a Volkswagen B5 automatic transmission

After diagnosis, it may be necessary to repair planetary gears that wear out and burst from vibrations. This happens especially often on cars with powerful engines. The box is not able to handle that torque. But don’t rule out natural wear and tear. It usually occurs after a mileage of 300 thousand kilometers.

The ECU (electronic control unit) is another element that can cause the transmission to kick and behave uncharacteristically. The automatic transmission control unit can independently block the operation of the box, or choose the wrong speed for switching. Automatic transmission repair consists of replacing failed units, as well as restoring control loops (if they were damaged).

Features of repair and replacement of Passat B5 automatic transmission in a car service center

Automatic transmission repair is a rather complex operation that also requires diagnostic knowledge. After all, it is not always possible to determine the cause by scanning errors. Sometimes it is necessary to disassemble the automatic transmission with further defects. It is difficult to do such work with your own hands. That is why it is more profitable to use the services of professionals. The technicians at the service station will help you correctly determine the cause of the box kicking and correctly fix the problem at a low price. In addition, the service provides a guarantee for the work performed.

On Volkswagen Passat B5 cars equipped with an automatic gearbox, according to the manufacturer's recommendations, the automatic transmission fluid is not changed, since its life should be enough for the entire life of the car, only checking the level and adding oil if necessary is allowed. But it often happens that replacement is still required. Next, we’ll look at how to change the oil in a Volkswagen Passat B5 automatic transmission with your own hands.

So, often the reason for replacing the working fluid is a malfunction of the automatic transmission. When driving a car, there may be delays and jerks when changing gears, and such symptoms can appear not only under certain driving conditions, but even in all modes. In general, non-standard behavior of the box may cause a replacement to be required.

The reason for incorrect operation of the automatic transmission is often an insufficient amount of oil, as well as contamination of the gearbox control plate with wear products. Therefore, on the Passat B5, changing the automatic transmission oil without flushing the plate may not eliminate the problem, or it may partially eliminate it.

This car was equipped with several types of automatic transmission, depending on the year of production. Next, we will consider the gearbox with the index 01V, which has been used on the Passat B5 since 1998. In addition to this model, it was also used on a number of other VAG cars.

Before starting all work, you need to stock up on everything you need, in particular automatic transmission oil in the required quantity, pan gasket, automatic transmission filter.

As for the working fluid, it is recommended to use only the original, its catalog number G 052162A2. If you can’t get such oil, you can also fill in liquid from other manufacturers. The oil that can be used in this box is MOBIL LT 71141 and ESSO 71141. In total, up to 9 liters of liquid will be required. Even if not all of the liquid is used up, the remainder can be used in the future for topping up. The pan gasket that will be required has part number 01V321371, and the automatic transmission filter has part number 01V325429.

Tools and accessories

Having purchased all consumables, you can begin work. To complete all the work, you will need tools and equipment:

  • Set of hexagons (from 8 to 17);
  • Torxes (from 25 to 30);
  • Torque wrench;
  • Containers for draining waste liquid;
  • Rags (in large quantities);
  • Fine tweezers;
  • Gasoline (for flushing);
  • Thin rubber pipeline for filling liquid;

All this will only be needed to work with the automatic transmission; you may also need all other keys, for example, to remove the pan protection. It is better to carry out all work in a garage equipped with an inspection pit.

Removing the pan, filter

Next, we describe in detail the sequence of actions. Work begins with the car being driven into the inspection hole, immobilized with the help of wheel chocks, and the protection is removed to gain access to the transmission pan.

It has a drain plug that needs to be unscrewed after placing a container under it to collect the liquid.

Only part of the oil will drain through the drain plug, so you should not remove the container too far.

Using a 8mm hex, unscrew the bolts securing the pan and remove it. On the inside of the tray there are magnets whose task is to catch metal wear products. The amount of metal shavings can be used to partially assess the degree of gearbox wear. If there are a lot of chips, then the box is worn out quite badly, and serious damage is possible in the near future. The tray should be washed thoroughly.

All connectors of the wires suitable for the control plate are also disconnected, after which the wire harness is released from its fixation and moved to the side.

You should immediately remember the position of the gearbox selector link; during assembly it will need to be installed, as before removal.

Removing and disassembling the control plate

The control plate is secured with 17 bolts, which will need to be unscrewed using torx screws. It is important to follow the unscrewing sequence. According to the official diagram, the bolts are unscrewed, starting from the one indicated by number 17 and moving up to the bolt with number 1, that is, the sequence is reverse.

After this, the plate is carefully removed from the box. At the same time, you need to be very careful; if you miss the plate, it will have to be replaced.

The internal cavity of the box located under the stove must be thoroughly wiped to remove any remaining oil.

The next stage of work is disassembling and washing the slab. The control plate consists of 5 components; inside there is additionally a massive plate, under which jets and balls are located.

First, the bolts securing all components are unscrewed. It should be taken into account that these bolts have different lengths, so it is better to immediately mark where and which bolt was located.

By removing the four components of the plate, access to the plate will appear. This plate must be removed very carefully so that the jets and balls located under it do not jump out.

Since you will then need to wash all the elements of the plate and the jets with balls will still have to be removed, you can proceed as follows: after removing the plate, wash it thoroughly and place it near the stove, then using tweezers, carefully remove the jets, springs and balls and place them on the plate where they are installed. In the future, this will prevent you from confusing their location.

Having finished removing the jets and balls, all components of the stove must be thoroughly washed in gasoline and wiped dry; if necessary, you can also dry them additionally to remove any remaining gasoline.

Assembly

After this, the slab is assembled back, and the installation of all small parts in their places must be strictly observed.

Next comes the assembly. First, the control plate is installed in place and secured with bolts. The force with which the fastening bolts must be tightened is 8 Nm. The sequence for tightening the bolts is from number 1 to number 17. During installation, it is important to ensure that the selector link is in place.

The next step is connecting the wiring and fixing it.
All that remains is to put the new filter and the pan itself in place, having first replaced the gasket on it. It is advisable to immediately replace the gasket on the drain plug.

Filling oil

The final stage of work is filling the oil. It is produced in several stages. To fill the oil, you need to unscrew the oil filler hole bolt. To complete the work, you will need a liter container (a plastic bottle will do), but you need to attach a rubber pipeline to the plug.

Using this container, oil is poured in until it begins to come out of the hole. Then you should start the car and operate the gearbox selector, switching it to all modes, but not lingering too much in each of them (no more than 2 seconds).

Next, the engine stops and the procedure is repeated - oil is added, after which the power plant starts and all modes on the automatic transmission are turned on. After two stages, at least 7 liters of liquid should go into the box.

The last stage is to bring the oil to the required level. It is carried out with the car running, and the transmission must be switched to parking mode (“P”). It is important to consider that this stage is carried out on a box heated to 35-45 degrees. It is imperative to observe the temperature, since a lower or higher temperature can lead to underfilling or overfilling of oil.

At the last stage, oil is poured into the box until droplets of oil begin to fly out of the filler hole. As soon as they appear, we can assume that the amount of oil has been brought to the required level.

This is how the automatic transmission oil is changed on a Volkswagen Passat B5 by flushing the control plate. If all the work is done correctly, then when the box is in operation, all negative phenomena (shocks, delays) should disappear.
