In the shadow of the “big brother”: we select and service a used Land Cruiser Prado. We buy a used Toyota Land Cruiser Prado of the third generation. What engines can be installed on the Prado 150

Domestic motorists know the 2TR-FE engine mainly from an SUV, under the hood of which it began to be installed in 2006. Some other models, such as the Hilux, have had the engine installed since 2004.

Description

ATTENTION! A completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption has been found! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also didn’t believe it until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

The 2TR-FE is the most powerful of Toyota's four-cylinder engines. The exact volume is 2693 cubes, but the inline four is designated as 2.7. Unlike an engine of the same volume, the engine is equipped with Toyota’s variable valve timing system, which in the case of the Land Cruiser Prado 120 and Prado 150 allows an output of 163 hp. at 5200 rpm of the crankshaft.

The Toyota 2TR-FE engine is equipped with four valves per cylinder, which improves purging of the combustion chamber and increases power, because the air flow constantly moves in one direction - from the intake valves to the exhaust. The chain drive of the gas distribution mechanism also contributes to the legendary Toyota reliability. 2TR-FE vvt-i is equipped with a distributor injection system.

Geometry and characteristics

Like many other Toyota engines, the engine cylinder diameter is equal to the piston stroke. Both parameters in 2TR-FE are 95 mm. The maximum power transmitted to the wheels, depending on the model, varies from 151 to 163 horsepower. The greatest output power is obtained from the Prado, whose torque is 246 N.M. The specific power of the 2TR-FE installed on the Land Cruiser Prado 120 is 10.98 kg per 1 horsepower. The engine compression ratio is 9.6:1, these compression ratios make it possible to use 92nd gasoline, but it is better to fill in 95th.

The power characteristics of the 2TR-FE give even a heavy SUV enough agility in city traffic, but on the highway, when you need to overtake from a speed of 120 km, the power may not be enough. Timely oil changes are extremely important for any internal combustion engine. The 2TR-FE engine is designed for 5w30 synthetic oil, which should be replaced every 10,000 km. For 2TR-FE, oil consumption of 300 ml per mileage of 1,000 km is considered normal. At high engine speeds, the oil goes to waste. The thermal gap in the engine is 0.02 mm.

With proper operation, the engine life before boring is about 500 - 600 thousand km, but after a mileage of 250,000 km, the rings will need to be replaced. That is, by the time the cylinders are bored to the first repair size, the rings are replaced at least once.

On many cars, after a mileage of 120,000 km, the front crankshaft oil seal begins to leak. The engine block is cast from cast iron and does not have a nickasil coating, which increases the service life and trouble-free operation of this engine.

The 2TR-FE engine was installed on such models as:

  • Land Cruiser Prado 120, 150;
  • Tacoma;
  • Fortuner;
  • Hilux, Hilux Surf;
  • 4-Runner;
  • Innova;
  • Hi-Ace.

Engine tuning

Tuning SUVs, namely installing larger wheels on them, as well as equipment that increases the weight of the car, leads to the fact that it becomes difficult for the 2TR-FE engine to pull all this mass. Some owners install mechanical superchargers (compressors) on the unit, which increase power and torque. Due to the initially low compression ratio, installation of the compressor will not require intervention in the block and cylinder head of the 2TR-FE.

The bottom of the 2TR-FE piston is not flat, it has “forges” for the valves, which also reduce the risk of the valve meeting the piston, even if you imagine that the chain will break, but with proper operation, the timing chain on the engine will last until the engine is overhauled.

Reliability, problems and repair of the 1KD-FTV engine

The 1KD diesel was released in 2000 as a replacement for the old 1KZ. It was based on its predecessor and was intended for Toyota SUVs and minibuses. The 1KD-FTV cylinder block is cast iron with two balancing shafts, and inside it there is a forged crankshaft with 8 counterweights and a piston stroke of 103 mm. The piston diameter is 96 mm, the compression ratio is 18.4, resulting in a working volume of 3 liters.

They covered the cast iron block with an aluminum 16-valve head with two camshafts. The diameter of the intake valves is 32.2 mm, the exhaust valves are 27.8 mm, the thickness of the valve stem is 6 mm.
Adjustment of the 1KD-FTV valves is officially prescribed after every 40 thousand km, but practice shows that the clearances can remain normal even after 200 thousand km. Valve clearances (cold engine): intake 0.2-0.3 mm, exhaust 0.35-0.45 mm.
The camshafts rotate using a toothed belt; the timing belt must be replaced after every 150 thousand km, otherwise the risk of breakage increases sharply, followed by the meeting of the pistons with the valves.

The 1KD uses Denso's common rail injection system.
This engine is equipped with a Toyota CT16V turbocharger with variable geometry and an intercooler. This turbine creates a pressure of 1.1 bar excess.

To improve environmental performance, the 1KD engine is equipped with an EGR exhaust gas recirculation valve.

The production of 1KD continues, but it is being replaced by the new 1GD diesel engine.

Problems and disadvantages of Toyota 1KD diesel engines

1. Rough operation, vibration, black smoke, loss of power, knocking. All these are symptoms of a cracked piston, which periodically happens with the 1KD-FTV engine for Euro-4. As a bonus, scuffing may form in the cylinder...
You can reduce the likelihood of such troubles by loading the engine less, not chipping, or replacing the pistons and injectors with updated ones.
In January 2014, Toyota replaced the pistons and the problem was resolved.
2. White smoke, low oil pressure. ICEs produced between the end of 2004 and 2007 had a problem with low-quality copper washers under the injectors and it is advisable to replace them with normal aluminum ones.

The service life of the 1KD turbine is about 200 thousand km, and the fuel injection pump and injectors serve the same amount. These are average figures and depending on the quality of the fuel, the resource may either increase or decrease. It is recommended to clean the EGR valve every 50 thousand km or turn it off and flash the ECU to operate without a USR.
The total resource of 1KD-FTV is quite high and can exceed 400 thousand km, under normal operation and timely maintenance.

Chip tuning

It is not recommended to chip 1KD-FTV diesel engines for Euro 4, this quickly leads to cracks in the pistons and major overhauls. If you don’t care or you own other versions of the 1KD internal combustion engine, then chip tuning will help increase output to 200 hp. and somewhat improve the dynamic performance of the car.

OFF-ROAD
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO RECEIVES A NEW 2.8-LITUR TURBO-DIESEL ENGINE

The Japanese company Toyota Motor Corporation has officially announced the start of sales of a new modification of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV, equipped with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine with Direct Injection fuel injection. The power unit, codenamed 1GD-FTV, is capable of producing 177 horsepower (130 kW) with a maximum torque of 450 Nm.
Let's say right away that the new diesel version of the popular Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV, equipped with a 177-horsepower engine, is currently available exclusively in the Japanese domestic market. This unit debuted quite recently on the updated Toyota Hilux pickup truck. The new engine replaces the outdated 3.0 D-4D unit and, as the company notes, has excellent fuel efficiency and a significantly improved combustion cycle due to the use of a new compact turbocharger that provides maximum torque at low engine speeds.
According to the official press release, the new 2.8-liter diesel unit of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV is capable of producing 177 horsepower (at 3,400 rpm) and 450 Nm of torque (ranging from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm). Paired with the new power unit is a 6-speed automatic transmission and a permanent 4x4 all-wheel drive system. In the combined cycle, the engine consumes about 8.6 liters of “heavy” fuel.
In addition, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV can continue to be equipped with a 2.7 DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine and a new 6-speed transmission, which replaced the outdated 4-speed automatic transmission. All of the above data applies to the Japanese version of the car, where the car will be offered in a new Red Mica Metallic color and with standard LED optics.
As a reminder, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV is currently offered in Russia in the following modifications: “Standard”, “Comfort”, “Elegance”, “Prestige”, “Lux” (5 and 7 seats) and “Sport” ( 5th and 7th places). Prices for the legendary car range from 1,999,000 to 3,329,000 rubles (including all possible discounts and special offers). In the engine compartment of the model there may be: 2.7-liter petrol VVT-i (163 hp at 246 Nm), 4.0-liter petrol Dual VVT-i (282 hp at 387 Nm) or 3, 0-liter diesel COMMON RAIL (173 hp at 410 Nm). The tandem power units can be a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic, combined with a permanent all-wheel drive system.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 is one of the representatives of the fourth generation Land Cruiser model range. Their history dates back to 1986 and continues to this day. The fourth generation Prado, especially the 150 model, first rolled off the production line in 2009. Having replaced its predecessors of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations, it was supposed to embody what was a flaw in previous models. Let's find out if she succeeded by reading this article.

Dimensions and appearance

Compared to previous models of the model range, the Prado 150 received a more attractive and modern appearance. The sharp geometric shapes inherent in Land Cruisers have been replaced by more streamlined ones. The same applies to optics. Instead of square headlights, the 150 had headlights with a more unusual shape, in the form of a teardrop, tapering at the edges.
The rear optics have also undergone significant changes. Their placement became slightly higher on the body, which reduced the chance of contamination, especially when driving off-road. The shape of the rear headlights became more elongated, and had a slight expansion towards the bottom.
The mirrors became more puffy and voluminous, and also received an additional turn signal. The radiator grille has also undergone minor changes. Its partitions, located vertically, have become more massive, emphasizing the fact that this car is a full-fledged SUV.

Reviews about the Land Cruiser Prado 150, especially about its appearance, are quite positive.

As for the dimensions, they have also increased significantly. For example, the length of the car from the edge of the front bumper to the edge of the rear is 4780 mm, which is significantly longer than the average crossover or SUV. The same is with the width: from the edge of the left rear-view mirror to the edge of the right, the distance reaches 1885 mm. With such dimensions, it is quite inconvenient to maneuver in dense city traffic or in narrow alleys.
The height of the car is quite impressive - 1890 mm, which is slightly higher than the average height of a person. Ground clearance takes 220 mm from the height. This is quite enough to overcome any off-road obstacles.

Diesel engine Prado 150

As practice shows, reviews of the Toyota Prado 150 diesel are quite good. Despite the fact that diesel engines often do not evoke positive emotions among car enthusiasts, this unit has gained a large number of fans.
The engine design consists of 4 cylinders arranged in a row, with a working volume of 2982 cubic centimeters. Each cylinder has 4 valves (2 intake and 2 exhaust). The maximum power that this unit is capable of producing is 173 horsepower or 127 kW at a crankshaft speed of 3400 rpm. The maximum torque, in turn, reaches 410 N/m at crankshaft speeds from 1600 to 2800 rpm.

Unlike its gasoline counterpart, this engine has a direct type of fuel injection and an additionally equipped turbocharger.

With such indicators, the technical characteristics of the Prado 150 are quite high. For example, the maximum speed of the car is 175 km/h, and acceleration to hundreds takes about 11.7 seconds. Considering the fact that the weight of the car reaches 2 tons, such acceleration dynamics are simply amazing for an SUV.
It is also worth noting that the fuel consumption of the Prado 150 diesel is quite small - only 8.1 liters in the combined cycle. This type of engine is equipped exclusively with one transmission option - a 5-speed automatic.

Salon

The interior of this model has quite impressive dimensions and can be used both for cargo and passenger transportation, and for exclusively cargo or passenger transportation. In the first option, two rows of seats are installed in the cabin: 2 front and 1 rear, capable of easily accommodating 5 average people. At the same time, the volume of the luggage compartment will be equal to 621 liters, which is quite a lot.
In the cargo-only version, the rear row of seats folds completely, freeing up a large amount of free space in the luggage compartment, and its volume increases more than 3 times: from 621 liters. up to 1934 liters. Well, if you only need passenger transportation, then you can install an additional row of seats in the luggage compartment. Thus, the car interior can easily accommodate 7 people.

As for the interior trim and equipment, it is not at all inferior to modern cars. For example, high-quality genuine leather is used for seat upholstery in this model.

The panels and pillars are covered with soft plastic, and the door cards are trimmed with a material that feels reminiscent of suede.
For convenience and comfort, a special block with buttons is installed on the steering wheel, allowing you to control the audio and video devices of the car without removing your hands from the steering wheel. As a multimedia system, the Prado 150 uses a high-quality video and audio player with a 7-inch LCD screen. In a word, the interior of this model is made with the latest technology.

Equipment and price

The basic configuration of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 with a diesel engine costs about 1,725,000 rubles. This amount is quite tolerable, considering that this package includes:

  • ABS;
  • ESP;
  • Full set of airbags;
  • On-board computer;
  • Parking assistance system;
  • Possibility of adjusting the steering wheel for reach and height.

To these options, if desired, you can also add: cruise control, air pressure sensor in the chambers, climate control, the ability to start the engine with a button, access to the interior without using a key, a recorder that rotates 360 degrees, a rain and light sensor, and heated seats with memory. But for the maximum configuration you will have to pay a substantial extra, since its cost is approximately 2,854,000 rubles.

Bottom line

It is worth noting that the Prado 150 model is equipped with an independent hydraulic suspension, the same as on other Toyota Land Cruiser models. It quite gently absorbs bumps and small obstacles when driving off-road. Due to the high ground clearance, it is possible to overcome large obstacles, as well as small rivers and fords.

On paved surfaces, the car feels amazing. Due to its heavy weight, it does not sway or tip over due to its wide wheelbase.

I have owned this legendary SUV for three years now. I am the second owner. I purchased it from the hands of a girl who bought it from an official dealer at the end of 2010. According to the passport it is also from 2010. This is my first five-door SUV in black, which at 7.5 years of its full life has already accumulated 82,000 kilometers on the roads of Russia and Kazakhstan.

Specifications:

My Pradika model is from 2010, so it is pre-restyling. High quality assembly from Japanese specialists with adaptation for the European market.

As for the dimensions, they have the following parameters:

  • The length of the car is 4840 mm.
  • Width 1855 mm
  • The height is almost the same - 1845 mm.

Some people think that these proportions of width to height can lead to the car tipping over, but I will try to dispel your speculation.

The wheelbase is 2790 mm. The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in the 150 body is significantly smaller than its older brother TLC 200, so it can easily maintain its superiority over it off-road.

The weight of the Prado makes one involuntarily respect it; the passport says 2400 kilograms, and the total weight is 3 tons.

It is equipped with three main power units, between which it was very difficult for me to choose. This is a 2.7-liter petrol four, a 4.0-liter petrol six and my three-liter diesel with 4 cylinders, which I did not consider as an option at all. In the region where I live, diesel fuel is far from being of ideal quality, so we have few diesel engines, and, accordingly, we also have few specialists in them.

This particular car was chosen solely because of its “fat” configuration and low mileage. The gasoline four was not satisfactory in terms of power, and the six was not satisfied with its appetite and taxes. After the purchase, I found out that although my power is not significant at 173 hp, the torque, which is more important on heavy cars, is 410 N * m. This is 20 Nm more than the top four-liter version.

The three-liter power unit is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, which, frankly speaking, is not suitable for racing at all. He thinks for a very long time, selects passes not as successfully as he would like. This is not surprising, since the Pradik is a heavy frame SUV.

Equipment:

As I noted above, my car has a fairly expensive package - “Prestige Plus”. Optionally, you can also add a third row of seats, a sunroof, a heated steering wheel and rear air suspension. Otherwise, my kit has everything!

I don’t think it’s worth talking about standard things, so I’ll only talk about the main points and cool little things.

Automatic transmission, black leather interior, a full-fledged refrigerator in the armrest, and a 220-volt outlet in the trunk. Everything is electrically adjustable. The steering wheel automatically moves towards you when you start the car and moves back as far as possible when you turn it off. The launch, by the way, is carried out using a button. The music is different from JBL, represented by 12 speakers, standard amplifiers and a standard subwoofer. There is a lot of space in the cabin; all the buttons, handles and other interior parts are simply huge, as are the rear-view mirrors.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 dashboard

It’s worth adding that getting into the car occurs without a key; after purchasing the Pradika, I forgot the last time I held them in my hands. This moment is very well thought out; already when approaching the car, it turns on the illumination of the thresholds and interior, as if welcoming you. This is quite a touching moment and cannot but rejoice. Now let's move on to the main features, both of my configuration in particular and the features of the Prado 150 in general.

The car has four cameras. One is located under the front Toyota sign, another is located in the back and two are in the side rearview mirrors. This is the most beautiful piece of engineering I've ever seen in a car. If you drive out onto the road from behind the high walls of houses and see nothing, just look at the cameras, they have already seen everything a long time ago. Parking is a pleasure. Off-road, they are the best assistants, unless you brought along a co-driver friend who would agree to be outside the car in the mud. In addition to the cameras, there are also 8 parking sensors installed all around, so it’s not surprising that the car was used by a girl before me, because it’s simply impossible not to notice anything in the parking lot with this car.

Regarding off-road capabilities, my configuration has everything: a low range of gears, interaxle (central) locking, interaxle locking of the rear axle and, most importantly, Multi-Terrain Select. Probably everyone is familiar with cruise control, but this is the same cruise control, only for off-road use. You set the direction, select the required speed, take your feet off the pedals and watch as your Prado frees you without your help from the most difficult mud, snow or sand traps. On the displays located in the dashboard you can see what position the front wheels are in. This is very helpful off-road.

I also forgot to mention the excellent headlights available in my configuration. The low beam is lensed xenon, the high beam is regular halogen. The special thing is that the headlights are adaptive. They turn with the steering wheel and show you the turn you are entering in advance.

Actual fuel consumption.

I was very surprised by the diesel fuel consumption. There are gasoline sedans driving around with a consumption of 12-14 liters in the city, while the cost of gasoline is 20% more than diesel fuel. On my heavy frame Prado 150, the consumption has the following figures:

city in summer - 10-11 liters (real consumption)

In winter it is 14-15 liters due to downtime due to warming up. The data here is exclusively from the on-board computer.

We drove long distances on the highway many times in the summer, so it was interesting to measure how long an 87-liter tank would last.

Based on the results, it turned out that the consumption is only 8 liters per 100 km at a speed of 90-100 km/h. If you drive it already at 140-160 km/h (at a maximum speed of 175 km/h), then the consumption even on the highway jumps to 11-12 liters.

I didn’t have to use it on the highway in winter, only for short distances, where the on-board computer shows 11-12 liters.

Oil.

All times I filled only with original Toyota 5W40 oils. The original oil filter and fuel filter are also installed along with the replacement. I change the oil every 6-7 thousand km.

Maintenance cost.

I haven’t done a full maintenance yet, I change the oil and filter and ride for my own pleasure. Replacing engine oil with oil and fuel filters costs 5,000 rubles. I also replaced the cabin filter (something around 700 rubles). I plan to change the oil in the box in the spring - 12,000 rubles. I also regularly “syringe” the cardans - this is a fundamental point for Pradik.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 black, rear

Breakdowns.

As for breakdowns, there were essentially none. Once the light bulb in the PTF burned out. This breakdown cost 1,500 rubles.

The next breakdown happened precisely because of the “illness” of the Prado in my configuration. Due to the constant movement of the steering wheel, when starting the engine, the cable in the area of the steering column, which is responsible for half of the interior buttons, wears out. In my case, only the signal and the ability to control the music system from the steering wheel were missing. Upon opening, it turned out that the previous owner had already encountered this problem and soldered this cable, but I decided to replace it with a new one for 6,000 rubles including labor. There were no more breakdowns and I hope there never will be. It’s not for nothing that the car is legendary and belongs to the group of “millionaires”.

Rubber.

Since purchasing the TLC Prado 150, it was already shod in Bridgestone Dueler H/T 265/65 R18. This is an all-season model that holds the road well, but even at minus five degrees it is no different from a summer model. I'm surprised by the wear resistance, it wasn't new at the time of purchase and I've had it for 3 years now, and the time for replacement is just approaching. It gets washed out quickly when off-road, it is quite noisy, it doesn’t keep track well, but overall it’s a 7 out of ten. I have never had winter tires, since the car is practically not used in winter

Dynamic characteristics.

The car holds the road excellently, but worse than competitors from Audi or Volkswagen. There is plenty of traction at the bottom, making moving around the city a pleasure. On the highway after 100 km/h the car refuses to move and overtaking is quite difficult. The car accelerates to 100 km/h in 11 seconds. As for braking, the car reacts adequately and brakes very quickly, but 2-3 times. After that, I wouldn't risk overclocking too much. The brakes "float" quickly. This is due to their small size and large vehicle weight.

Excellent stability of the Pradika in my configuration is provided by the KDSS system. This is another brilliant piece of engineering. At high speeds, the suspension becomes very stiff, which prevents the car from swaying, and at low speeds it completely “unfolds”.

Hydroplaning and ice.

It is impossible to put the car into a skid with all the safety systems turned on, no matter how you shake the steering wheel, it will go straight, but once you turn everything off, you will understand that even on a frame SUV you can have fun.

Behavior at high speeds.

At high speeds, the car stands confidently on the road, steers easily and does not evoke a feeling of fear from driving.

Advantages.

I will indicate the main advantages later in the pros, but here I would like to add about the attitude of other motorists in the stream. You have to drive 2 cars, the second one is ten times cheaper. A huge difference, Pradik is respected on the road regardless of its year of manufacture, especially if it is black. They rarely honk, they will let you through without any problems. Another main advantage is that its price is slowly decreasing. Over 3 years, the average price for my 2010 model fell by only 4-6%. I just can’t believe it, but I often look at car sales portals and see price tags for my car that don’t change.

Flaws.

Noisy engine, cheap plastic in the cabin, lack of modern automotive systems.

Safety.

This is what the Prado excels at. Powerful frame, modern materials and shock absorbers, a large number of airbags. I was never scared in this car, if you are fastened, you get the impression that you are in an armored capsule, you know that the frame will protect you from any SUV and sedan.

Pros:

  • Reliability.
  • Off-road performance.
  • Fuel consumption.
  • Music system.
  • Landing.
  • Comfort.
  • The versatility of the car.
  • Trunk volume.
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 black luggage compartment

Minuses.

  • The diesel engine lacks power after 100 km/h.
  • Noisy diesel engine.
  • Poor sound insulation of arches.
  • Disgusting paintwork.
  • High quality of some interior materials.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 black, loaded for the road

Conclusion.

Today I don’t know a more reliable, convenient and comfortable car for that kind of money. With the release of the new 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, I began to doubt the attractiveness of my pre-restyle. And I can say with confidence that I will definitely not switch to another car in the next 10 years. He's better than you think.
