You've dreamed of owning a radio-controlled car all your life. Since childhood. It is commendable - there is a desire and opportunity - there is an offer. Where should you start? Scale
Let's start with scale. There are many of them and they were all invented for different purposes. For example, 1/24 and 1/14 are so-called office or desktop machines. And this is not an understatement! For 1/24 cars, you can actually draw the track on the table and drive it. Although after a couple of days you will get tired of it - it drives poorly, it skids all the time.
It’s better to drive 1/14 already on the floor - it won’t fit on the table. This is more serious. Many office workers race through the corridors during lunch. I saw it personally.
These are all hobby cars.

The cars that will be written about below are more serious. You can not only drive them in the yard and at the dacha, but also take part in races.
RCE 12
The 1/12 are trail models, both carpet and asphalt, designed for racing and racers. Despite the rear-wheel drive, with good grip on the road, they are easier to drive than any other, if... you don’t drive fast. With a powerful motor, the “twins” turn into a projectile, the flight of which can only be controlled by trained people. This car is very sharp, nimble and requires a good reaction. In principle, with all that has been said about these models, they are ideal for a person who wants to compete and intends to win in the future. "Dvenashki" are simpler in their setup than all other cars, they are difficult to break. What else is needed? This is a good driving school - many champions started in this class.
Tenth scale
There are a terrifying variety of classes, subclasses and models in the tenth scale. These include road models and SUVs, models with internal combustion engines and electric motors, with the bodies of sports prototypes and road sedans, buggies and trucks (trucks), etc. and so on.
Let's start with road models. Basically, not hobby stuff, it seems to me, so let's talk about it from a racing point of view.
Supertourism
The world's most popular racing models are the super touring. Body racing has long been very popular not only abroad, but also here. This is the most popular class in the Russian national championship. Models are equipped with all-wheel drive, independent suspension, shock absorbers and differentials. Setting up these cars is a complicated matter, but forms with settings for team racers can come to the rescue; fortunately, they can be found on the Internet at every step. A modification of these models are cars with internal combustion engines.

Essentially the same thing, but instead of an electric motor, it is a two-stroke engine running on a mixture of castor oil, methanol and nitromethane. Each company has two models in production at once - both an electric train and a gasoline one. This class is not for everyone - such models are dirtier than electric ones, the motors are capricious to set up, and expensive in case of breakdown. But at the same time, it is very beautiful to watch the struggle on the track - the roar of the engines is inimitable. But not more.
In principle, it is much easier to learn on an electric train, where you will only have to adjust the chassis; in the second case, you will also have to think about engine settings. I'm not even talking about the fact that you can ride an electric train all year round, because we don't yet have indoor tracks for models with internal combustion engines. Let's move on to Offroad?
SUVs
There are more variations here - buggies, trucks, rallies and jeeps. In principle, the models are similar in design to the cars I spoke about earlier, only they have long-travel suspensions, completely different wheels, and the position of the center of gravity is chosen so that the model can easily jump over trampolines and does not turn over in flight.
Buggies and trucks are the same chassis, but with different bodies and tracks. The first ones have a narrower track and a body, as you understand, a buggy. The latter have a wider track and the body of some American pickup truck or small truck.

Rally cars are actually a “super touring” class model, but with a long-travel suspension and, as a rule, with special protection against dirt (we’re not going to drive on asphalt!). They are always all-wheel drive, but are much inferior to the first two models in cross-country ability - the wheels are smaller and the ground clearance is the same. Therefore, if buggies and trucks can be driven on a lawn (preferably mowed), and on sand, and even on a plowed field, then for rally models some kind of hard surface like compacted sand, fine gravel, or a forest path is more suitable . There may also be electric motors and internal combustion engines. The biggest plus of an internal combustion engine for entertainment purposes is that you fill it up and continue driving, with the first one having to charge the batteries after a maximum of ten minutes. Well, if you are far from electricity, your mood may be spoiled.

A very popular hobby all over the world. Many people have probably seen on TV how American pickup trucks on huge wheels easily drive over the roofs of cars and jump from trampolines. Great? These cars look no less impressive, have a powerful 3.5 cc internal combustion engine, all-wheel drive, two shock absorbers per suspension, and the ability to install a gearbox with reverse gear. The list can be enumerated endlessly. Such models are not very efficient, but in order to have fun in the country, on some country road, or through puddles, they are quite suitable.

Fifth scale
Onroad
The fifth scale, in principle, has a right to life, but on the track the cars look very awkward. The whole problem is that there is no all-wheel drive modification, so it’s difficult to drive them. But the engine has simply a huge resource, unlike 2.5 or 3 cc engines of tens, where the resource of a pair is no more than 10 hours, then the 22 cc engine of fives is almost eternal. Road versions include touring cars, formulas, and trucks. I personally don't like these cars - big, clunky and expensive. The price of a professional chassis can reach up to three thousand dollars. But at the same time you will get hydraulic disc brakes with separate rear and front circuits, the chassis will be made of carbon fiber. It looks really impressive. In principle, the clumsiness of these cars is due to the lack of wide and long tracks and the lack of an acceptable level of grip.
Offroad
I prefer fifth scale SUVs. This is really why you don’t need to choose a place to ride - they will go almost anywhere. The models are produced only in the standard and cheapest version - the SUV does not need disc brakes or hydraulics, although they can be installed. Therefore, this is the most economical type of fives in terms of price.

Fundamentally, the model consists of the following parts:
- chassis
- frame
- motor
- speed controller
- steering gear
- receiver
- battery
Chassis- this is the chassis of the car. It consists of: transmission (it comes with a belt and cardan drive), suspension (they are always independent on wishbones), shock absorbers (hydraulic), steering linkage. The supporting part is either two carbon plates, or one, but made of carbon-filled plastic.
Frame made of transparent material - polycarbonate or Lexan.
Motors There are two fundamentally different types - stock and modified. The stock or standard motor is distinguished by the absence of bearings and a larger (compared to the modified) number of rotor turns - 27 - which means lower revolutions. It is easier for beginners to handle - it is very smooth and does not frighten you with breakneck speed, like a modified motor. Modified ones are usually supplied with a number of turns of no more than 12. Moreover, the speed of such an engine is almost twice as high as that of the stock one.
Speed controller- This is a device that allows the engine to rotate smoothly. They come in two types - with and without reverse gear. On each regulator it is written what the minimum number of turns the motor must have (if there are fewer turns, the regulator will not withstand too much current). If you are not going to race, then buy a regulator with reverse gear - you will need it when driving on rough terrain. Well, if you are going to become a professional athlete, you will have to learn to drive without reverse. Such regulators are lighter, have higher quality key transistors and, accordingly, lower losses (due to lower internal resistance).
Steering gear(or servo) is a mechanism that allows you to change the position of the turning wheels. The machine has two very important parameters - the speed of rotation at an angle of 60 degrees and the force that it can create. You should not take a steering wheel with a force of less than five kilograms (50 N), but it is better to have a turning speed of less than 0.10 seconds. Otherwise, it will either be difficult to turn, or the turn will occur with a delay.
Receivers distinguished by the type of modulation used when transmitting the signal from the transmitter - AM and FM, and by the frequency range in which they operate - 40 MHz and 27 MHz. Remember that a receiver designed for FM will not work with an AM transmitter, and crystals for a 40 MHz receiver will not work in a 27 MHz receiver. There are also ranges of 53 and 75 MHz, but in Russia equipment operating at these frequencies is practically not found, at least in automobiling. They are typical for the USA, Japan, etc. It is best to take 40 MHz FM equipment, since it will have the least amount of interference and interference from stationary radio devices (such as radio communications).
Batteries. Let's start with the fact that batteries for our hobby are produced by at least four companies - Sanyo, Panasonic, GP and Powers. Now the Chinese company GP occupies a dominant position in the market, thanks to the fact that it managed to make very powerful and capacious batteries. When purchasing, it is advisable to choose batteries with a capacity of 3000 or 3300 mAh from Sanyo and GP. However, for a hobby you can take any batteries, since they do not require any ultra-high voltage values or other super characteristics. Batteries of 3000 and 3300 mAh are filled with nickel metal hydride. Its difference from nickel-cadmium batteries is that they last longer, since they do not have a discharge memory (for now, take it for granted, we will talk about this in more detail in another article - for us now it is important that they last longer).
Models with internal combustion engine
They consist of all the same components, but with slight differences. Instead of a speed controller, a second servo machine appeared, which regulates the position of the carburetor throttle valve (in other words, opens and closes the “gas”) and is responsible for the operation of the brake mechanisms. Well, instead of an electric motor, of course. internal combustion engine (ICE).
The following engines are available for car models: 2.1, 2.5, 3.5, 22, 25 cubic centimeters. The first two engines are used on tenth scale machines, the next on all eighth scale models, and the last ones are used on 1/5 scale machines.

Everything else is similar, but made more durable - the torque of a gasoline engine is much greater than an electric one, and the engine temperature is high for carbon elements, so the chassis is usually made of metal - either titanium or aluminum.
Equipment
What is Factory Team and why a beginner doesn’t need it.
Now let's talk a little about the configuration. There are four types of them. I won’t say much about the simplest ones, but know that for the lazy there is an RTR (Ready to Run) set. This is a box that has everything you need to start riding right away, and you won’t have to rack your brain about what else you need to buy besides the model. It’s better not to show up at races with such a box - everything there is very simple and hobbyist, but for the yard this set is just right. In addition to this, there are three more options - Custom, Team Kit, Factory Team Kit.
There are different names, but the principle is the same. So…
Custom- This is the cheapest chassis kit, as a rule. there are no carbon parts in it at all (everything is made of carbon-filled plastic), there may be no CV joints or bearings. By the way, about the material. Purely plastic parts are rare in models - this material is very soft, and in any car we need rigidity so that there is no inconsistency in the operation of suspensions, steering, etc. To do this, graphite is added to the plastic, which makes it possible to obtain high rigidity. Pure carbon parts are weaves of Kevlar fibers, carbon fiber and special resins, baked in an autoclave under high pressure - such parts are very light and incredibly rigid. Recently, all this has appeared in custom kits. However, some things are missing. There are definitely no overrunning clutches, aluminum or titanium fasteners. Is this necessary to begin with? I think no. If you are just starting to race, or if you only intend to ride in the countryside, in the yard, and do not intend to become a world champion, then these parts are not needed at all.
Team Kit costs at least one and a half times more than the first set, because it is already a completely carbon chassis with bearings, CV joints, and possibly freewheels. This is, so to speak, a moderate set in terms of price/bells and whistles, but I wouldn’t recommend it to beginners. Why? The period when a person, with intensive training and constant performances in competitions, begins to drive more or less normally, understand what needs to be changed in the car, how to configure it, and so on, takes a year, or even two. During this period, even the most sophisticated car will not bring him closer to the leaders.
well and Factory Team- this is a car for people who fight for every gram, for every fraction of a second. No, it is not faster, but this configuration is a little lighter, it is crammed with all the options that the company produces. And such a car costs 60-100 dollars more than anything else. Why does a newbie need it? At the initial stage, it is better to save money for competitions - it will be more useful, and in the end you will come to Factory Team later. Take your time.
What else is needed besides the model?
Radio control equipment
When buying a radio control, first of all, choose equipment that suits you and that fits well in your hand. It's like a weapon, you have to feel it. Don't listen if someone tells you that you can't win on a lever console, that you will lose to everyone on it. These are all fairy tales - almost all world champions ride on levers, but at the same time, a pistol-type remote control is no worse. I can also give you two valuable pieces of advice - you shouldn’t buy the cheapest one (where there are no trimmers and wheel angle adjustment), and the most expensive remote control - it won’t make you drive faster. You don't need all these features that are now available in $450 models. It is better to take a middle-class computer remote control with memory for several models, exponential controls (this is a non-linear dependence of the movement of the wheels or throttle), and adjustment of the steering angles. The most popular device among this class of remote controls is perhaps the EX-11 from KoPropo.

If you buy a model with an internal combustion engine, then everything is the same, only instead of large cans for on-board power, four AA batteries are installed, and instead of a regulator, as we have already found out, you will have a second steering wheel that will regulate the engine gas and brakes .
Charger
When you decide to buy an electric train, you will not be able to do without a charger. It’s not easy to give advice here, because the more expensive and modern the charger, the longer the batteries last. If we talk about mid-level chargers, which will be enough for a beginner for all occasions, they will cost about $150 (sometimes less, sometimes more, depending on the manufacturer). This is approximately equal in cost to three selected batteries.
Keeping in mind that battery life is highly dependent on its care, think twice before being tempted by entry-level chargers. They do not have discharge or training modes, and do not allow you to customize charging characteristics or control the charging process.
Of course, if you are on a limited budget, no one will stop you from caring for your batteries manually and saving about a hundred dollars on a charger.
When purchasing a charger, be sure to check what type of battery can be charged with a specific device. The charging cycles for nickel-cadmium and metal hydride batteries are different, so what is good for NiCd batteries is death for NiMH.
However, if you still choose the internal combustion engine model, then the on-board batteries can be charged from the charger that comes with the radio control equipment.
Starter
When purchasing a model with an internal combustion engine, you need to pay attention to the method of starting the engine. There are three options: an electric starter (but this is, as a rule, an option), starting the engine from a stand (the flywheel is forcibly spun by an electric motor on a special stand), and, excuse me, “pulling” (like in a lawn mower).

The option with an electric starter is preferable for fun outings with an SUV - simple and convenient, although a little more expensive than the third option. But starting from a stand is used by racers, and there is no special starting device on the motor. Thus, you need this notorious stand, and this is another 100 dollars, in addition to the already expensive model.
In all cases except the first, you will need a glow plug, which is a battery connected to the spark plug during startup to heat the spark plug coil. In its simplest form, it costs about $10, and you can insert a regular battery into it. The battery and charger for the glow plug already cost $30.

This is quite difficult to do for all classes, so as an example, we will give the comparative cost of sets of tenth scale models with an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. These are perhaps the most popular classes in our country, and the order is approximately clear. The only thing is that you don’t get scared, the equipment is given taking into account future performance in competitions, so in principle, you can save another 100-150 dollars on a regulator and charger for electric trains. Well, unfortunately, this won’t work with an internal combustion engine.

Which companies to choose
There are many opinions on this matter. If you are choosing a model for a hobby (SUV, rally, truck), then we can advise you to choose Traxxas, HPI or Tamiya. Each company has everything listed above, and of very good quality. If you are looking for a racing model, then you should first take a closer look at who wins and with what car in the national championship and in the world. Currently the leading positions are occupied by Yokomo, HPI, Losi and Associated. These companies make really high-quality models. As for equipment, it is worth taking a closer look at Hitec, KoPropo, Futaba and JR. All of these models are incredibly reliable and proven in racing conditions.
Electronics like receivers and regulators are made well by LRP. Although sometimes this equipment breaks down, the company gives a lifetime warranty on it, so there is no need to worry too much.
The Italians make the best internal combustion engines for car models - Picco, Novarossi. The first motor is more durable, and the second is more powerful, but these are racing motors. For hobby use, very good motors are produced by the Japanese company OS.
When it comes to electric motors, Reedy, LRP and Peak are considered the world leaders. Orion also looks good, but sometimes the quality of the engines is a little lame.
Where to practice
Yes, you did it and bought a car! So what's now? Of course, ride! But where? If you have an SUV, then there are no problems at all - get together with friends, lay out a small track in the country, in the forest, in the yard, and off you go! I advise you to buy models with a group or look for like-minded people on the Internet, otherwise you will quickly get bored of riding alone. If you have something on the road, then you will have to look for a parking lot with smooth asphalt, and friends - it’s boring to be alone. But it is better to direct your attention to official and various club competitions.
In Moscow, the only summer asphalt track is in Luzhniki. Skating there is paid - 300 rubles per hour, if my memory serves me correctly. But there is also a small track in the Pelican club with a good carpet surface. For those who have an SUV, I recommend the track on Uchinskaya Street, which was built by the Hermes club. Well, the stages of the Russian Championship and Cup are held not only in Moscow, but also in Vladimir, St. Petersburg, Tambov, Taganrog. Most of the winter season takes place in Vladimir. This is where the best competitions of the season take place!
