At the end of the 90s, almost simultaneously with the start of mass production of cars of the “tenth” family, work began on their restyling, after all, the “tenth” family was developed back in the 80s and by the beginning of 2000 could not fully compete with budget foreign cars.

Compared to its predecessors (cars of the tenth family), more than 950 fundamental changes were made to the design of Lada Priora cars and more than 2,000 new parts were introduced. In addition to the exterior, changes also affected the interior of the car, which was developed with the participation of designers from the Italian company Carcerano. The interior is eye-catching with a new soft plastic panel and a new instrument panel with a trip computer. In the center of the panel there is a silver-colored console overlay, in the center of which there is an oval clock. The cars of the “Priora” family now have an armrest, which the “tenth” family lacked, and some trim levels are equipped with air conditioning. In addition, Priora has become much safer compared to the Ten.
As a power unit, the Priora was equipped with various engines, both 8 and 16 valves, which received some foreign-made components, their power ranges from 81 to 120 horsepower. The first VAZ-2170 cars were equipped with a VAZ-21114 engine with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 81 horsepower. In addition to it, 1.6-liter engines were installed, such as the VAZ-21116, VAZ-21126 and VAZ-21127, whose power is 90, 98 and 106 horsepower, respectively. However, this is not all: the Tolyatti company “Super-auto” installs a 1.8-liter VAZ-21128 engine with a capacity of 120 horsepower on the Priora. It is worth noting that from the very beginning of production, all Priora engines comply with environmental standards Euro-3 (for Russia) and Euro-4 (for European Union countries).
The chassis of the car has also undergone modernization, the front suspension struts have changed, and the rear suspension has received new shock absorbers and a rear anti-roll bar has appeared. The cars already received electric power steering as standard (there are modifications with power steering), electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and anti-lock braking system with electronic brake assist (ABS + BAS).
In some trim levels, cars are equipped as standard with air conditioning with a climate control system, heated not only the rear but also the windshield, electric windows both front and rear, a light and rain sensor, heated and electric mirrors. During this time, there were no special complaints about the car, but first things first. So, as always, let's start with appearance, because people are greeted by their clothes. From the front it is an ordinary Lada Priora, the same as a sedan or station wagon, but in profile the hatchback looks prettier than its counterparts. Perhaps the side view is the most advantageous for this car; it looks dynamic and harmonious. At the front, the impression is slightly spoiled by the overly large headlights, but there are practically no complaints about the stern. But, as they say, it depends on the taste and color... If we talk about the rear of the car, then it is worth saying that the rear door opens up a fairly large opening in the luggage compartment, there are no problems with loading and unloading. The trunk volume of the hatchback is 400 liters, and with the rear seat folded down it almost triples. It is worth noting that the folding mechanism remains “ten”, it is not very convenient and the seat only folds entirely. You can open the trunk not only with the key, but also with a lever from inside the cabin. Let's move on to the interior. There are still the same “nine-ten” seats. Personally, I don’t find them very comfortable - my knees are high, I have to sit reclining, and my back gets tired on long trips. After this, the high driving position on the Chevrolet Aveo is perceived much better. Thanks to the ability to adjust the steering wheel, a driver of any height will be able to get behind the wheel. But, with my height of 186 cm, sitting in the back “behind me” is already problematic for me. True, in this class it is difficult to find a car with a “limousine” interior;) If access to the front seats is good, then seating in the back is hindered not only by the backs of the front seats, but also by the door opening itself, but this probably already refers to “nitpicking”; ) I won’t go into detail about the beauty of the interior, because everyone has their own opinion and everything can be seen in the photo, I will only say that the interior did not make an impression on me, everything was done somehow “clumsily”, the plastic is loud, and the “silver” of the center console is generally "No comments". I’d rather share my impressions of the functionality. The doors open and close with a characteristic VAZ sound. The door handles inside and outside are comfortable. The car is equipped with front electric windows, control buttons are located on the doors, which, of course, is convenient and understandable. If we talk about window regulators, then it is worth noting one nuance - the windows do not go all the way down. On the "tens" it was like this with the windows in the rear doors, but here the front windows don't go all the way down. In addition, on the driver's door there are buttons for controlling the electric mirrors (also very convenient) and locking the doors. It is worth noting that the mirrors are heated, as is the rear window. The dashboard is convenient and informative (I liked it), there is an on-board computer with control on the steering column lever. Apparently, because of this, the light control unit is placed on the panel under the left hand, it does not cause any inconvenience, but you need to get used to it. As for the steering column switches, they did not pose any inconvenience to me. The plastic of the panel is also not the most pleasant, although it is not as loud as on the “nine”. The “silvered” center console is especially depressing. There are no complaints about the ergonomics - the control of the "stove" is convenient, the air duct deflectors are in their places, but the view is not impressive. The clock looks good, but it’s unclear why they made a cover on the niche under the radio. Apparently for extra noise, because when this lid is closed, even a CD won’t fit in there. The glove compartment is quite roomy; in addition, there is an eyeglass case on the ceiling and niches in the doors, although not very roomy. As for the plastic, although it is not as loud as on previous models, it does cause problems, not only with squeaking. Some plastic interior elements simply fall off over time due to broken fasteners. The steering wheel does not look very good and is generally unpleasant to the touch (the solution is a cover), it is equipped with a hydraulic booster, and is adjustable only in height (tilt angle). Driving the car is quite easy, but at the same time, “thanks to” the power steering, the steering wheel is not very informative, so you need to try to get close to the car so as not to “do something weird,” especially on the highway. The Lada Priora hatchback is equipped with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder 16-valve engine that produces 98 hp. With. and a 5-speed manual transmission. This engine is quite sluggish at low speeds, but if you rev it up to 3000 rpm the car becomes faster. Of course, I’m not a racer, but the car’s power is quite enough for me, in any case, I can overtake a truck without any problems. At the same time, the engine is quite economical - consumption on the highway is about 6 liters per 100 km. (sometimes it can be 5.5). In the city, about 10-11 liters per hundred, of course, it all depends on the specific conditions and driving style. Sometimes there are problems with engaging first gear, you need to “restart”. The same problem occurred on previous VAZ car models. As for the chassis, it repeats that of the cars of the “tenth” family and does not present any special problems. Everything is already familiar from previous models, simple and inexpensive to maintain. I think that the suspension is well suited for our roads, or rather for the lack thereof. As for the cost of spare parts, there are special breakdowns over 30 thousand km. was not observed. Recently the timing belt tensioner pulley jammed and I had to replace the belt and roller. All other costs related only to periodic maintenance. Among the inconveniences, it is also worth noting the squeaking of the brake pads, noise in the cabin, and insufficient rigidity of the “floor” of the trunk covering the spare wheel. Is it worth buying a Lada Priora hatchback? In my opinion, the answer is not so clear-cut. The new Lada Priora VAZ - 2172 in Ukraine starts from 82 thousand UAH; you can buy its older brothers and even the Lada Granta much cheaper. A used VAZ-2112 with almost identical characteristics is cheaper. And for similar money you can buy a ZAZ Vida (Aveo) or Lanos. The choice is yours.
